I need to read more, like the actual hard copy of a book. Until I can afford a chauffeur and or an assistant, I’ll stick to all the podcasts and audiobooks I can get my hands on.
With that, I am going to hold myself to listening to at least one book a month and highlighting a few of my favorite podcast episodes. The holding myself accountable part comes from you! As my dear friend or not you are just reading this because are helping me hold to my simple goals of stretching my brain. These posts will not be a well-written book report, just my take on what I gained from the adventure in someone else’s words.
Reads and Listens
This month, the listen was recommended by one of my favorite podcasts and my sister. The Disappearing Spoon: And Other True Tales of Madness, Love, and the History of the World from the Periodic Table of the Elements by Sean Kean is the pick of the spooky month.
First off, I love good non-fiction reads that I can gain random, fun facts from. This book is exactly that, all the fun facts. I need to buy the hard copy and read it again so I can highlight and make all sorts of notes. Grad school never really leaves you, does it?
Kean weaves the tales of the discoveries of the elements that comprise the periodic table in a manner that is exciting and fascinating. The author described so many of the tales that I heard throughout my high school science courses just on a grander scale. Along with what the element does and so on…
In short, if you are looking for a little science education this is the book for you!
Shout out to my junior high and high school science teacher, Mr. Mackey, he clearly did a great job with my education as I was like “OHHHHH YEAHHH” through so many parts. I apologize to Mr. Mackey for being an obnoxious student who made fun of your sock and Birkenstock attire on so many occasions. I get it now, it’s a pretty great footwear choice in a hurry. And thank you for inspiring me to actually like things you can’t see.
Podcasts
The podcasts that mentioned this book was My Favorite Murder. It’s always solid. I blame my state trooper Father and Mother who let me stay up way too late as a kid watching Dateline for my love of true crime. On a daily basis, this podcasts make me beyond thankful for the health class that taught me to be extra observant of the world around me. Therefore, Stay Sexy and Don’t Get Murdered.
The main feature this month is from Reply All. A whole episode dedicated to the issues with feral hogs. I posted a picture from my car on The Rising M Facebook page, and I still excited about it today. This is a rural issue that received major airtime for an urban audience on this podcast and online. I would encourage you to check it out last week’s episode and subscribe because the guys will make you laugh for sure!
