ESPN is broadcasting cornhole tournaments nearly every weekend. So why aren’t you trying out for your local team? Is that a thing?
I am currently searching for a team. Who wants to enter up?
I had so many questions when I built my first set, and then the sixth set, but I found less real answers on truly building a set of regulation boards. I can’t say this is the best information, but this is what I learned. I have had a love hate relationship with building six sets of boards. Love is when everything matches up and I get the angles right. Hate is when it doesn’t layout right. This blog details some of the fun, and all the tips.
This is the first set of board I did for my cousins. They wanted boards that had a Hereford bull and mountains on them. That is exactly what I delivered. I can tell you funny stories on my mess ups.
Building the Board:
These are the two posts I have followed and found helpful.
Tips:
- Ensure you buy FLAT and straight boards.
- The two other instructions state you can do this with a circular saw. Yes, you can, but the cuts are so much better for the body and legs of the boards with a chop saw. If it is all you have, YOU CAN DO IT, just have some patience.
- If you purchase a whole sheet of plywood, use a table saw to cut the 24×48 pieces. Again, go slow, measure four times, if you use a circular saw.
- You can use a jig saw to cut the center hole, but I would advise buying a six-inch hole saw.
- I could easily be wrong, but for the legs start with a 9° degree angle.
Painting Tips:
- Double or triple cut the vinyl if you have a Silhouette for the outlines. This helps you weed easier and then you can lay faster on the board. If you have Circuit, again, be patient.
- Measure your exact placement.
- Roll the vinyl. Rolling pin, paint can, your finger, whatever you have. ENSURE you have no bubbles.
- I have only used acrylic paint, but I am certain you can use whatever you have.
- Sometimes no matter how hard you rolled the vinyl after placing it, you will need to run you finger over the edge before you put paint down.
Epoxy:
- I use this epoxy. It’s thick, it takes a lot, but it’s GORGEOUS and worth it.
- I use a triple polyurethane for the sides, underside and legs.
In our family college sports are a similar to national holidays. My Momma is a diehard Beaver Believer and I am a proud and dedicated Red Raider. Which set do you like better? I won’t tell Momma Meg, if you are on my team.
Let me know when you make ESPN, I will be there with a Ranch Water in hand cheering you on!

Pre-drill a hole along the edge of the circle large enough to accept the jigsaw blade. Remove the drill and use a jigsaw to cut out the circle. Sand the edges of the hole smooth. We painted standard triangles on our boards. To do this, stretch blue painter’s tape in the shape you want, and paint the desired area.
